The 2025 Core77 Design Awards have officially concluded, and 3ERP are proud to once again play a key role as a CNC services supplier in bringing this year’s recognition of global industrial design excellence.
As a long-standing provider of high-precision CNC machining services, we are proud that Core77 continues to choose 3ERP as its trusted partner for trophy manufacturing. Our collaboration has grown naturally over the years, and each new award season gives us an opportunity to push our craftsmanship even further. With our advanced CNC capabilities, including multi-axis milling and high-quality surface finishing, we produce the dual-purpose trophies with the accuracy needed for functional molding and the polished look that defines the Core77 Design Awards.
A Spotlight on Core77 and Its Design Awards
Before diving into the manufacturing capabilities required for this project, let’s briefly look at the organizations involved.
What Is Core77?
Core77 is an online design magazine and community dedicated to industrial design. Founded in 1995 by Stuart Constantine and Eric Ludlum, it has grown into a global platform that serves students, professionals, and design enthusiasts. The site publishes articles, hosts forums, job listings, portfolios, and industry resources, and also organizes events and design competitions.
What Is Core77 Design Awards?
The Core77 Design Awards is an annual international competition founded in 2011 to celebrate the best work in the design industry. The program is open to both professionals and students, with multiple categories highlighting innovation, creativity, and impact.
Winners in each category receive the official Core77 Design Awards trophy. All honorees, including Winners, Runners Up, and Notables, are featured in the online awards gallery and receive a digital ribbon to display in their portfolios or websites.
Each year, Core77 works with specialized manufacturing partners to produce these custom aluminum trophies, ensuring the precision and craftsmanship that make the awards so distinctive.
Project Overview: Crafting the Dual-Purpose Core77 Trophy
The Core77 Design Awards trophy is more than a symbolic keepsake. Its underside is engineered as a functional mold, allowing winners to create additional cast replicas for every member of their team.
This thoughtful design requires both the precision of tooling fabrication and the visual refinement expected of a premium award. At 3ERP, we approached the project with the same care we apply to high-end consumer products, combining advanced CNC machining with carefully managed finishing processes to achieve consistent quality across every unit.

| Final Outcome | Custom aluminum trophies that function both as awards and as working molds |
Technical Challenges
1. Dual-purpose functionality
The trophy needed to work both as a display award and as a functional mold. This required machining the underside with the same level of accuracy used in rapid tooling projects.
2. High-precision CNC machining
The internal mold cavity had to be milled from aluminum with tight tolerances to ensure it could consistently produce clean cast replicas in wax or other materials.
3. Premium surface quality
The top surface had to look like a premium display piece, requiring significant hand-polishing to achieve a clean mirror finish.
Manufacturing Processes
Preparing the Aluminum Blanks
Every Core77 trophy starts with carefully selecting the right material. We use high-quality 6061 aluminum for its excellent machinability and ability to take a polished finish.
CNC Machining the Trophy Components
The CNC milling process was multi-stage:
Rough Cutting: We used 3-axis CNC milling machines to efficiently remove bulk material and establish the trophy’s basic geometry.
Precision Milling: Multi-axis machines then meticulously carved the functional mold cavity on the underside, adhering to the strict tolerances required for casting.
Engraving: Finally, we used precision engraving to inscribe each winner’s details, ensuring sharp, consistent, and permanent marking.
Surface Finishing
This phase transformed the machined part into a beautiful award. The top surface side is hand-polished through multiple stages, transforming the metal into a mirror-like finish. Meanwhile, the exterior areas are sandblasted to create a smooth matte contrast. Our team carefully inspects each piece and performs touch-ups as needed.
Cleaning and Quality Assurance
Before packaging, each trophy goes through ultrasonic cleaning to remove any debris or residue from machining and polishing. We then performed detailed inspections using CMM technology to verify dimensional accuracy and a visual check to ensure surface finish uniformity.
Packaging and Delivery
Finally, we package each trophy with soft protective materials to prevent scratches during shipping. Every unit is carefully boxed and shipped to Core77, ready to be delivered to the winners.
Looking Ahead
3ERP is honored to have partnered with Core77 on six separate award cycles, including the 2025 Core77 Design Awards. This ongoing relationship reflects our commitment to quality, precision, and supporting global innovation.
